Power Outage After a Storm in Luxembourg: What to Check
After the Storm — Don't Just Flip Breakers Blindly
Luxembourg gets serious thunderstorms in summer. Lightning surges, fallen branches on power lines, and water ingress are the top causes of post-storm electrical problems.
Step 1: Is It You or the Grid?
- Check neighbours' lights — if the whole street is dark, it's Creos. Report at creos.net.
- Check your panel — if breakers are tripped, the issue is inside.
Step 2: Safe Things to Check
- Differential breaker (30mA) — if tripped, water may have entered an outlet or appliance
- Main breaker — a surge may have tripped it
- Surge protector — many have an indicator light or window
Step 3: Reset Carefully — Once
- Unplug sensitive electronics first (TV, computer, router, fridge)
- Flip the breaker fully off, wait 30 seconds, flip on
- If it trips again, stop. Repeated resets after lightning = fire risk
Warning Signs You Need a Pro
- Burning smell anywhere
- Outlets sparking when you plug things in
- Lights flickering across multiple circuits
- Appliances that worked before now don't power on
- Brown marks around outlets
Why You Should Replace Surge Protectors After a Strike
A single nearby lightning hit consumes the protection inside the surge protector. It looks fine but no longer protects anything. Replace it.
Typical Cost
- Storm damage diagnosis: €100–€200
- Surge protector replacement (panel): €150–€350
- Appliance circuit repair: €150–€400
