Losing the last key to your car is stressful, but it is a solvable problem. The route depends entirely on your vehicle's key system — for many cars a new key can be created and programmed, for others the manufacturer has to be involved. First Steps Right Now
1. Check the obvious places once, calmly — pockets, previous shop, the door lock itself. 2. If the car is parked in a public place and you suspect theft rather than loss, consider having the lost key removed from the vehicle's memory once a new one is made. 3. Collect the registration document and your ID. 4. Note the make, model, year and, if you can find it, the VIN from the windscreen or documents. 5. Creating a Key With No Original
Without an existing key, the mechanical profile must be derived from the lock or the vehicle data, and the new transponder has to be introduced to the immobiliser. On many vehicles this is possible on site. On recent models with encrypted or dealer-only key databases it is not, and no honest service can promise otherwise. In that case we explain the dealer route and what documents you will need, so at least you do not lose a day discovering it yourself. Compatibility always depends on the make, model, year and immobiliser system of your vehicle. We check this before any intervention and tell you honestly if your car cannot be handled on site — we never promise a key we cannot deliver.
Proof of Ownership Is Not Optional
We only make keys for people who can show the car is theirs: registration document plus matching ID, or a written authorisation for company and leased vehicles. This protects you far more than it inconveniences you.
After the New Key
Once the replacement works, have a second key made straight away. Going back to a single key simply resets the countdown to the same problem, usually at a worse moment.
